17 Apr FAQ about YiDrone, a consumer category discovery tool
Q: Why is it called YiDrone?
A: Yi is from the first two letters of Yimian, our company name. The magic of the tool is to discover scale, growth, and trending concepts in a consumer category, just like a drone flying over an unknown territory to scout.
Q: What’s the data source scope of YiDrone?
A: Currently, YiDrone covers consumer categories from Alibaba’s e-commerce platform, tmall.com. As Yimian continues to expand our partnership with other major e-commerce websites in China, we would add other data sources.
Q: How many product categories does YiDrone cover?
A: As of April 17, 2019, YiDrone covers 14 level-1 categories:
- Clean & Care
- Personal Care
- Baby Food
- Baby Care
- Electrical Appliance
- Health Shaping
- Kitchen Appliance
Each Level-1 category includes several Level-2 categories, each of which in turn includes several Level-3 categories.
For example, Level-3 “Fabric Softener” is under Level-2 “Fabric Care” of Level-1 “Clean & Care”
Q: What is the amount of data behind this tool?
A: It’s hard to say since we continuously add new categories. As a rule-of-thumb, each Level-3 category typically has tens of thousands of SKUs, each SKU has one snapshot of price, volume, and revenue per month. Therefore, for a 2-year coverage of one Level-3 category, the typical number of monthly SKU data record is in hundreds of thousands.
Q: What’s YiDrone’s current geographical coverage?
A: YiDrone covers Mainland China e-commerce, currently on tmall.com.
Q: Do I have to read Chinese to use YiDrone?
A: No. We have bi-lingual interface including English and Chinese. You can use YiDrone in English to discover quantitative insights. However, you do need some help from a Chinese friend or online translator to understand the trending keywords, which remain in their original Chinese language.
